Options Trading Risk

Of all the various types of trading, options trading carries significantly less overall risk. Options trading offers investors the ability to buy or sell stock at a later date. The options trading risk is only the cost of that ability--as an options trader, you are buying the right to buy or sell in the future, without immediate obligation. Because with options trading risk is lower than with most other types of investments, options trading is becoming increasingly popular.

Options traders have the right to buy or sell but are not obliged to do so, although options do carry expiration dates. Typically, stock options expire by the end of business day on the third Friday of the expiration month. For example, if you buy an option which expires in October, you will need to exercise the option to buy or sell before the close of business day on the 3rd Friday in October. Options typically have four month life cycles, so expirations occur three times per year. If you do not exercise your option during its life cycle, then you encounter one options trading risk: the risk of losing your option due to expiration.

However, the primary options trading risk is the price of the option itself, called the "premium." The premium is determined by a number of factors including the value of the stock to which the option is attached and the option's expiration date. The premium is priced per 100 shares of the attached stock. When you buy an option, the amount of the premium is debited from your trading account. If you sell your option, the selling price is credited to your trading account.

Options trading is a low-pressure type of investing. If your desire is to find a trade that will give you greater choices with less worry, options trading may be ideal. The options trading risk is minimal and the gain can be significant.
