Commodity Futures

Commodity futures are fast emerging as a major way in which people invest and speculate to make money. Electronic trading has made this even easier. These days, clients orders are directly routed to the appropriate futures exchange for execution within one second of the order submission.

Consider this! Chicago Mercantile Exchange, the largest U.S. futures exchange, reported record trading volumes in July 2004 (29% over prior years). According to observers and brokers, even the number of part-time investors is on the rise.

Why has there been an almost sudden jump in the popularity of commodity futures trading ,though the upward swing has been there for quite some time?

Probably the number one reason is the ready availability of information on the subject on the Internet. More people today then ever before are aware of the benefits and potential to reap a rich harvest in this market. But not too long ago, commodity futures trading were thought by many investors to be too complicated, too demanding and required great sums of capital to participate in. That misconception is now mostly gone..thanks to the Internet, commodity study papers and the various courses.

Another important reason is the reduction in the minimum investment funds. Previously, most brokerage firms used to charge around $5,000, $10,000 or even more. But now as more people are coming in to commodity futures trading, the minimum investment has been reduced to $2,000 by many. This trend will again spur many others to join up.

In the commodity futures market, people often mix up a futures contract and a futures option. The truth is that, though they are similar in some way (both have an expiry date), they are mostly strikingly distinct to each other. Whereas a futures contract is an obligation, a futures option is the right to buy or sell a commodity at a specific price any time before the option expires.
